Till Freiwald, a German artist who lives in France, creates huge watercolor portraits of unidentified young men or women. These eerily monumental, impassive staring faces seem to relate to Chuck Close's early head paintings at first glance, but they are only superficially similar--largely on account of scale. Painted from memory after smaller studies from life, Mr. Freiwald's portraits lack the intense particularity and personality of Mr. Close's portraits, but loom and glow mysteriously. They are haunting in the way most traces of emotion have been erased, which makes them utterly riveting.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.View More Testimonials
