Description

FROM THE ESTATE OF DR. EDMUND P. PILLSBURY

    SCOTT RICHTER (American, b. 1943)
    Painting for Liars, 2002
Oil paint and medium on plywood backing
    26-1/2 x 31 x 4 inches (67.3 x 78.7 x 10.2 cm)

    PROVENANCE:
Elizabeth Harris Gallery, New York, October 2002

    NOTE:
In this deeply ironic work of art, which Richter titled Painting for Liars, huge gleaming blocks of paint and medium itself become the imagery. Jostling one another for position, the paint sculpted upon this "paint object" resembles a kind of "boogie-woogie for bumper cars" (Nancy Prinsenthal, review of Richter's 2002 solo exhibit at Elizabeth Harris Gallery in Art in America, November 2002). Indeed, the arrangement is almost certainly an intentional reference to Dutch artist Piet Mondrian's canonic abstraction invoking New York traffic, Broadway Boogie Woogie (1942-3, MoMA, New York), but stripped of color, and with paint rather than painting taking center stage. Richter trained at the Parsons School of Design and lives in Connecticut.

    Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000.
