    RICHARD WOODS (British, b. 1966)
    Drippy Paint Drawing #31, 2002
    Enamel paint on paper
    44-1/2 x 32-1/2 inches (113.0 x 82.6 cm)
Signed with initials and dated lower right

Deitch Projects, New York, October 2002

This large drawing by contemporary British artist Richard Woods appropriates its imagery from one of the most famous--and infamous--works by French sculptor, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. That work is Carpeaux's La Danse, a whirling composition of several nude figures engaged in a wild and boisterous romp, which was commissioned in 1869 by the Opera Garnier in Paris. Upon its unveiling, the sculpture was vehemently criticized as an offense to common decency. By using dripped enamel to draw Carpeaux's controversial image, Woods was appropriating the medium of another infamous figure--Jackson Pollock--who threw skeins of paint onto unprimed canvas and turned the art world on its ear. The combination of controversial subject and iconoclastic technique would have held great appeal for Ted Pillsbury.

We are grateful to Dr. Henry Adams, Professor of American Art at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, for identifying Carpeaux's sculpture as the basis for Woods' imagery in this drawing.
