Painter Philip Argent's elegant hard-edged abstractions deal with certain aspects of technology--mostly references to computer graphics/design and virtual space.

In recent correspondence with Heritage Auctions from Santa Barbara, where he teaches Painting at the University of California there, Argent explained: "This painting [in Ted Pillsbury's collection] is one of a series that used a repeated motif or structure as a beginning point (the 'scalloped' edges and curved sections at bottom left and right in this case). This 'framing' allowed me to work in the white central space and to play and alter the various 'windows', openings and color bars & shapes as the series progressed."

"The diamond dust," Argent notes, "is something that I had been using for several years up to this point. There were several reasons why I used it: as a way of activating a large white area in a painting without actually using paint, mark or color - optically it reads white from a distance and obviously sparkles under direct lighting. Also as a kind of metaphor for what I thought of as the slickness and pristine quality of the backlit computer screen."
