Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York, March 2002

    NOTE:
New York-based artist Peggy Preheim is known for her minutely detailed, minuscule graphite drawings on otherwise blank sheets of paper, creating a mood and atmosphere palpably nostalgic and intensely personal. Her drawings are influenced by the small sixteenth-century panel paintings of the Low Countries, while their lush black-and-white tonalities evoke early found photographs on which they are often based. Preheim grew up in a Mennonite family in South Dakota, which moved from a small town to Sioux Falls during her childhood. The themes of dislocation and isolation that pervade her works are read by some as autobiographical, and by others as a more universal theme of living in our modern times.
