    Artist's Statement:

In my use of a limited number of shapes and colors I am referring to traditional Minimalism, but with asymmetric placement of these elements and the inclusion of recognizable, symbolic imagery, I am trying to update Minimalism with energy and humor.

I regard the color gray as a symbol for the middle, and a suitable color to present heads, curtains, mountains, ancient vessels or ice-cream cones. The box, with off-center gray rectangle and implied corners is a symbol of flux. The yellow color chartreuse, here is a symbol for light and positive energy; and some of my chosen yellow forms include candle flames, eggs and circles. My elliptical formation of circles in this color, (which is the subject of a painting called Stream of Consciousness) implies movement, a series of ideas, or a group of lights..... A television screen-like form which I present with a refined, bold, black line: This symbol functions as a frame within the picture plane, and also a container for other characters. My slightly tilted, black rectangle, on a field of white, like some of my other forms, are not only references to past Modern assertions, but function as conversational partners to the recognizable symbolic characters.
