    NOTE:
Alex Brown, a contemporary artist from Des Moines, Iowa, paints images that resemble digital photographs that have been manipulated. He doesn't use software to specifically create the image but he may use it as a step in the process of making a filter for the image. Once he breaks the image down into patterns, the artist reconstructs the image onto his canvas. At first glance there doesn't seem to be much there because you don't see the image immediately. After awhile, however, the image emerges. The artist's intention is for the viewer to look "for" the image rather than "at" it. Brown has stated that he hopes the viewer will "fall into . . . less recognizable moments" compared to the experience of looking at a "more straightforward work." His paintings thus call attention to complex interaction between and among the mechanics of seeing, cognition, and visual memory.
Brown holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Parsons School of Design in New York.

    Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
