    W. EUGENE SMITH (American, 1918-1978)
Mother and Child, from Hitachi, Japan, 1961-1962
    Silver gelatin, 1961-1962
    5-3/8 x 8-1/4 inches (13.7 x 21.0 cm)
Verso: credit and copyright notations written in ink and 23rd Street stamp affixed
    State: dry-mounted onto black board

Proof that famed photojournalist Smith had within his oeuvre a range of emotional and aesthetic possibilities is evidenced by this small but powerful study. The mother, almost reduced to a dark silhouette, bows her head forward as her child peeks backward out of a blanket around her neck. Sea, sky, and mountain in the distance add a gently indistinct backdrop-all the better to contribute to this universally abstracted vision of Asia-in-transition.

Condition Report*: Mounted onto black board. All four corners of board are bent. Right edge of board has a vertical bend. Extremely fine emulsion crack upper half of print, barely visible in raking light only.
