    Vik Muniz (Brazilian, b. 1961)
The White Iris After Edward Weston, 2012
    Digital pigment print
    5-1/2 x 4-3/8 inches (14.0 x 11.1 cm)
Signed in ink with the photographer's statement in a label affixed to verso.

Label affixed to verso reads: "I used The Daybooks of Edward Weston, Volume I: Mexico (Aperture, 1973), and Weston's photograph of his lover, Tina Modotti, when invited by Aperture in 2011 to make a new piece inspired by a publication from Aperture's history. I chose The Daybooks as my source, because it was written by a photographer. Weston tells the story of his journey to Mexico in a very personal way, which reveals his creative process and personal transformation. It's also a very romantic book. Most of my work is about emphasizing the bits and parts, the mechanisms and gears, that make an image work. For this picture, I remade Weston's image of Modotti, using Weston's words, torn out of a copy of The Daybooks."
