THIRTEEN CROW MEN FROM LODGE GRASS, MONTANA
c. 1889

Boudoir card lacking a photographer's stamp or imprint. Ink and pencil inscription below image: "Seminole [sic] & Crow Braves, 1889." Pasted labels and stamping, verso, from former owner, Culver Pictures, Inc.

The handsome man standing at center is the noted war chief Medicine Crow, who had traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Garfield in 1881. A Crow Tobacco Society necklace with pendant tail of a mule deer hangs on his chest. The older man standing at left is the noted seer Bull Goes Hunting, Medicine Crow's uncle and step-father. He had been photographed as a member of the Crow delegation at Fort Laramie in 1868. The rider at far left has a quirt made from the cut-off wooden leg of a chair hanging from his wrist.
