    c. 1895

"Promenade" card with imprint of the influential San Francisco photographer, Isaiah West Taber (1830-1912). A slightly-longer variant on the standard "cabinet" card mount, Taber developed his Promenade Cards to feature horizontal, urban panoramas, or tight, vertical portraits, as in this grouping. All of Taber's glass negatives were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.

Two handsome couples, each woman is standing with hand touching her seated husband. The women's faces are painted. The men have been posed with a deck of playing cards, probably for the Mexican game of Monte, popular in the 19th-century Southwest. The "table" is an inverted, pottery cooking pot, a trade-craft of the Pima and their Papago neighbors. Pasted labels and stamping, verso, from former owner, Culver Pictures, Inc.

    Dimensions: image 5 x 7 ¾ inches; mount, 5 ¼ x 8 ¼ inches
