"In the years that I have see[sic] your things. The froth and spume of delicacy has been constantly thrown off and the work is as clear as morning - with a whole day ahead. This is splendid." - Nathaniel Shaw to Paul Strand

"I am please by what you said of my manner of expression - also I agree with you. But unfortunately the "style" is not so good with it tries to adapt itself to a larger and less friendly audience and attempts at the ridiculous purpose of complete ramification...It is interesting to me how the attitude toward the words and sentences has changed. In the past they used to attempt to remark an emotion, or were they only the vapour from the emotion. One word led to another in kind of a dreamy fog. It was like a fabric draped protectively about an impression. ...Words seem so easily misunderstood and statements so easily misinterpreted that one cannot take too great pains in attempting to be clear and exact. In the past perhaps I depended upon the emotional content to hold the crust together and now the antithises - I try to have the crust hold together the content." - Nathaniel Shaw to Paul Strand
