PROVENANCE:
The artist;
Abe Frajndlich, gift from the above, 2010.
In December 2009, I went to Tokyo to photograph Araki and Shinoyama. Eikoh Hosoe was my guide to both of these Japanese photographers. Since I had known Eikoh since the mid seventies and had photographed him in 1989 in Tokyo for Penelope's Hungry Eyes, I reached out to him before setting up these shoots, and he was most accommodating in opening the doors to these difficult to access Japanese photo stars. The portrait of Araki in my Penelope book has this image behind him, and at some point in an alcohol filled night, we decided to trade a print of my portrait of Berenice Abbott for this wonderful image of Araki's. I was thrilled, and I now hope someone will enjoy it as much as I have during the time I have lived with it.
