    KILLS A CROW CHIEF
    c. 1880 Kills a Crow Chief (Kangi Itancan Kte), called Crow King, Hunkpapa Lakota, by D.F. Barry, at Fort Buford, D.T., autumn, 1880. Albumen cabinet card,

Leader of a band of 80 warriors, during the Battle of Little Bighorn Crow King was prominent in driving Reno's troopers out of the valley and across the river, later leading the charge which overwhelmed the soldiers on Calhoun Hill. Two of his brothers were killed in the battle. He was one of Sitting Bull's band chiefs during the Canadian exile, 1877-1880. Crow King surrendered at Fort Buford, D.T., in the autumn of 1880, when this portrait was made. He wears a bone hairpipe breastplate over the coat of a U.S. Army officer, and a dentalium choker. The shoulders of the coat are ornamented with locks of human hair. Strips of otter fur wrap his braids, while a single eagle feather in his hair modestly understates his battle prowess.
