This lot is accompanied by a preliminary drawing of this work from Witkin inscribed to Marlene Meyerson.
This extraordinary work by Joel-Peter Witkin is distinguished by its hand coloring and encaustic treatment, creating a richly textured surface. It is presented in a unique, custom-made frame featuring fourteen recesses, each containing an encased mummified bat arranged along the the perimeter. An inscription along the top of the image, translated from Middle Dutch, reads: "And their reward is to gaze upon the face of God."
Condition Report*:
Overall excellent condition with no visible defects. Framed without glass with unique custom frame to 42-1/2 x 38-1/2 inches. Not examined out of frame due to framing method.
