Description
Irving Penn (American, 1917-2009)Dusek Brothers, New York, 1948
Gelatin silver
6-3/4 x 8-3/4 inches (17.3 x 22.4 cm)
Signed, dated, and inscribed in ink mount recto; stamped with the 'Condé Nast Publications, Inc.' copyright and the photographer's stamp mount verso.
NOTE:
This lot is accompanied by an original printing plate, as well a copy of the July 1948 issue of Vogue magazine, in which a variant of this image is published on page 59.
PROVENANCE:
Gift from Irving Penn to Wally Dusek and by decent to the current owner.
This photograph comes from the estate of professional wrestler Wally Dusek whose real name was Charles Staten (1909-1991) and shows "The Dusek Riot Squad" from left to right - Emil, Ernie, Rudy and Wally.
The well-known Irving Penn photograph of the Dusek brothers was published in the July 1948 issue of Vogue magazine with the caption "Wrestling on Television: The Dusek Brothers. Wrestling is television's stand-by - whenever there's no better card. Because N.Y.C. has more video screens than any other city, it sees more of the Dusek Brothers."
The Irving Penn Foundation had no record of this variant and speculated that it could have been just a single print made and given as a gift.
