Description
GERONIMOc. 1886 Chiricahua Apache Chief Geronimo and his band as Prisoners-of-war. Photo by A.J. McDonald, on the Southern Pacific Railway line, near the crossing of the Nueces River, Texas, September 10, 1886. Title information and date appear as pencil inscription in lower margin, together with identifications of the chief, his lieutenant Naiche (called Natchez), and his son Chappo. The boy at lower right is probably Geronimo's grandson. Albumen print on board.
After many years as fugitives, Geronimo's small family band was captured in northern Mexico. Here, they were approaching San Antonio, where they were held at Fort Sam Houston for six weeks, before continuing on to an exile at Fort Marion, Florida, thence Alabama, before being settled on the Kiowa and Comanche reservation near Fort Sill, Oklahoma Territory. Earlier in the year, another group of Chiracahua had been sent to Florida. In four months following the making of this photograph, more than 100 members of the band died of pulmonary infections caused by damp conditions near the Gulf coast.
