Born in Vienna in 1921, Ernst Haas grew up in an artistic household; however, his education was disrupted when Germany invaded Austria in 1938. Haas was sent to a German labor camp and later forced out of medical school due to his Jewish ancestry. After leaving medical school, Haas acquired his first camera in 1946. Influenced by photographer Werner Bischof, he realized the potential of photography for storytelling. His project "Homecoming" captured the emotions of prisoners of war and led to an invitation to join Magnum Photos alongside Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Haas traveled the world with Magnum, settling in New York in 1951. He was one of nine Magnum photographers selected to document John Huston's film, The Misfits, in 1961. This beautifully framed image gives us a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, and John Huston on the set of Monroe and Gable's last film. Gable suffered a heart attack just weeks after production, and Monroe died of an overdose the following year. Haas' photo is a touching tribute to the celebrities, one of their last moments together.
