Partial original image description studio sticker at upper left on verso, "The Old Well of Acoma". Original studio sticker at lower right on verso, "Curtis Home of the Curtis Indians At Home and Studio Portraiture The Curtis Studio Seattle Wash., U.S.A."
This photograph was made near the Pueblo of Acoma in New Mexico in 1904. It appeared in photogravure as Portfolio Plate No. 571 in Volume 16 of The North American Indian. Curtis's caption reads: "Members of Coronado's army of explorers in 1540 and espejo in 1583 noted the 'cisterns to collect snow and water' on the rock of Acoma."
