EAGLE PLUME

This is very near in time to the preceding portrait, with the same earrings, choker and necklaces, but here the man is wearing a different gingham shirt and front-seam, wool cloth leggings. His long headdress of golden eagle feathers has narrow horns on the cap, with brass buttons accenting the red front panel. The Kansa had been removed from their traditional homeland in eastern Kansas, to Indian Territory among their Osage cousins in 1873. Eagle Plume was in the Capitol seeking increased assistance from the government. The tribe had numbered 533 individuals at the time of removal. By 1889, only 194 survived. On January 4, 1879, the Friends' Review (Vol. XXXII: p. 330) reported: "Eagle Plume, who made a visit East, has died of pneumonia."
