    Yoshihiro Makino (Japanese, 20th century)
    Sector 1, No. 1, Chandigarh, 2018
Edition of 10, archival pigment inket print on platine fibre rag paper with luster surface
    56 x 38 inches (142.2 x 96.5 cm)

Designed by Le Corbusier with Pierre Jeanneret, the planned city of Chandigarh, India, remains one of the most ambitious projects in the history 20th century architecture. Los Angeles based artist Yoshihiro Makino photographed the city, and the Capital Complex-a UNESCO World Heritage Site-recently publishing his work as a photographic essay, The Open Hand: Le Corbusier's Chandigarh (2018, August Editions). Like many photographers, Makino's images document the dramatic forms of the celebrated modern monument; but they also look further, presenting smaller moments he calls 'semi-abstractions', exploring the colors and textures of the life of the city and its buildings.
