CURLEY (ASHISHISHE), CROW (APSAALOOKE) SCOUT FOR LT. COL. GEORGE CUSTER DURING THE BATTLE OF LITTLE BIG HORN

Boudoir card. Seen here at the age of about twenty-six, Curley was the youngest of the Crow scouts assigned to Custer, barely nineteen in 1876. The last of Custer's scouts to leave the command, as the soldiers proceeded down Medicine Tail Coulee toward the river where they had intended to ford and attack the Sioux village, Curley saw the soldiers overwhelmed from two miles away. Riding alone through the night and the next day, he carried news of the disaster to the steamer Far West, waiting with supplies on the Bighorn River. Still alone, he then carried dispatches back to the battlefield, where he joined General Terry's command in aiding the survivors. He remained an army scout for several years thereafter. Curley died in 1925, and is buried with other veterans of the battle at the Little Bighorn National Monument, near Crow Agency, Montana.
