    Description

    Christian Jankowski (German, b. 1968)
    The Matrix (eight works), 2000
    Dye coupler
    18-5/8 x 23-1/2 inches (47.2 x 59.7 cm) (each, or the reverse)

    PROVENANCE:
    Klosterfelde Gallery, New York Armory Show, 2001;
    Private collection, acquired from the above.

    The Matrix Effect was created for the MATRIX series at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. Jankowski transformed the artists of the MATRIX series into children. He proposed the "Matrix effect," a supernatural age reversal of the individuals who were committed to new art, resulting in seven year old versions of John Baldessari, Sol LeWitt, Adrian Piper, Louise Lawler, and others who offer their commentary on contemporary art. These are portraits of the children who were not actors and played the parts of these artists in the video piece which was showed at the Wadsworth Atheneum September 23, 2000 to January 7, 2001.
