    Description

Cabinet Card - Studio portrait of two Kiowa-Apache Chiefs, Da-va-ko and Dor-con-each-la
    Circa 1889 - 1891
    Length 6 1/2 in. Width 4 1/4 in.

The seated man is wearing a traditional Southern Plains hide shirt and a bone hairpipe breastplate. Both men have their hair braids wrapped with otter fur and each holds an eagle feather fan.
Photograph by William Lenny between 1889 and 1891. Working out of Purcell, Indian Territory, William Lenny traveled to Anadarko to record life on the Kiowa-Comanche Reservation and the Wichita-Caddo Reservation. He compiled an important record of life on the reservation, taking a number of impressive field photographs and studio portraits. Subjects included Kiowa, Comanche, Kiowa-Apache, Caddo, Wichita, Delaware and Oto Indians. In late 1890, William Sawyers purchased Lenny's interest in their business. John Connolley then worked for the studio in 1891 and 1892. This print was made from Lenny's glass plate negative.
Printed on the front of the card, "Apache Chiefs" and "Sawyers and Connolley, Purcell, Ind. Ter.". The reverse side is blank. Excellent condition and tone.
