    ALLEN GINSBERG (American, 1926-1997)
Neal Cassady and Natalie Jackson Conscious of Their Roles in Eternity, Market Street, San Francisco, 1955
    Gelatin silver, circa 1996
    16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm)
Recto: inscribed in ink in artist's hand
Verso: Signed 5/30/96, AG, Sid Kaplan print in graphite in artist's hand
    State: unmounted, matted

    Inscription reads:
Neal Cassady and his love that year Natalie Jackson conscious of their roles in Eternity. Cassady had been ideal prototype for Jack Kerouac's late 1940s On the Road picaresque saga hero Dean Moriarty, as later in '60s he'd taken the driver's wheel of Ken Kesey's psychedelic era crosscountry bus "Further". His illuminated American automobile mania, eager multireferential eloquence & grass-roots erotic energy had already written his name in bright-lit signs in our literary imaginations be-fore movies were made imitating his charm. That's why we stopped without plan to fix the passing hand on the watch, San Francisco, probably March 1955.
    Allen Ginsberg
