    Description

AGENT JAMES MCLAUGHLIN, CLERKS AND INTERPRETERS OF THE STANDING ROCK AGENCY, D.T.
    c. 1882

Cabinet card with imprint of "Barry, Bismarck and Standing Rock, D.T." From left, the men are: Interpreter Joe Primeau; George Faribault: Agency Physician Dr. E. S. Hart; Agent James McLaughlin; Chief Clerk Bird M, Robinson; and Jim Merrill. The members of this group are seated in chairs which have been carried outside from the Agency Office building. Another clerk is seen in the window at left. Although appointed in 1880, political investigations of the preceding regime delayed McLaughlin's arrival at Standing Rock until the autumn of 1881. This image is so early that Barry did not yet have a studio at the Agency. The exterior sunlight was therefore necessary to make the exposure.

This lot is accompanied by a "Superior Edition" of My Friend, the Indian, by James McLaughlin (#853/3005) and a photocopy of a letter written by Capt. Myles Moylan to Maggie Calhoun on December 21, 1876, which includes a map of the Custer Battlefield victims.

    Dimensions: 5 ¼ x 8 inches, excluding frame
