    Visually stunning - Historically Important

    c. 1852
Delineating every detail, the subject is wearing uniquely Iroquois shell necklaces, a beaded hat with ostrich trade plumes, beaded arm bands and a bandolier bag with beaded strap and pouch. Remarkably, the image is highlighted by over one hundred individually applied, pin-prick size dots of silver and gilt. This treatment is certainly unique in our experience and clearly indicative of the importance attached to this historic image. This is doubtless one of the most important Native American images to appear on the market in recent auction history.

While known to collectors on the east coast for the last fifty years, the collector, who purchased this lot at a church rummage sale for $2 in the 1950s, sternly rebuffed myriad offers by all others wishing to purchase the image. As a result of the passing of the collector, and the decision by his widow to consign the majority of his vast collection to Heritage, the image is offered here for the first time in a half century.

    Dimensions: 2 ¾ x 3 ¼ inches

Condition Report*: Pristine and untouched. While retaining only vestiges of the original seal, the image is uncleaned and retains, what are clearly, the original mat and preserver.
