    Description

A HALF PLATE TINTYPE PORTRAIT OF AN UNIDENTIFIED PRAIRIE MAN, POSSIBLY IOWA
    c. 1863
It is interesting to note that, although the image does not carry indigenous provenance, the subject bears a striking resemblance to the Iowa Chief Black Hawk, ref. 1869 portrait by A. Zeno Shindler, Native Anthropological Archives, Neg. #gn-03899. The subject holds a 'gun stock' war club with heart shaped piercing and brass tack decoration. He wears a large silver brooch and peace medal necklace. Although tintypes of Native Americans c.1870 -1880 do occasionally surface, only a handful of 'hard image' portraits from this earlier period, especially in this large format, are known. This is a most rare and extremely desirable Native American portrait.

    Dimensions: 4 ¼ x 5 ½ inches

Condition Report*: Absolutely superb quality. There is a small area where the image is adhering to the cover glass, most likely the result of casing the image while that area was still damp. The emulsion is 100% intact and perfectly sound, although an attempt to remove it from the cover glass could result in damage. Else pristine condition.
