"SAM, UTE WARRIOR"

"Sam, Ute Warrior," (Uncompahgre), by Charles M. Bell, Washington, D.C. Mounted on board, with gilded edges.

The same pair of beaded moccasins seen in the two previous lots are also worn here; and the same peace medal has been added. His leather shirt, probably rubbed with yellow-ocher tempera, has broad bands of seed beadwork and a beaded neck flap. What appears to be a "chevron" at his left shoulder is actually the corner of a striped silk scarf folded and tied to contain a packet of herbal perfume, such as sweet leaf. Strips of otter fur wrap his hair.
