Original The Scarecrow and Tin-Man in Yucatan newspaper story illustration
This piece is reproduced on page 92 of the reprint book, The Scarecrow and Tin-Man of Oz, by W. W. Denslow, Hungry Tiger Press, 2006

After the publication of author L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900, the two famous creators had a falling out. Thanks to an unusual dual ownership of the full copyright, each man produced his own series of newspaper stories in late 1904. The McClure Syndicate ran Denslow's series, The Scarecrow and the Tin-Man, and the series ran for fourteen weeks. Although the detail was cropped out of this drawing, the boat in this scene was named the "Sea Horse," a reference to Denslow's monogrammatic signature.
