Accompanying the lot is a copy of Dr. Frederick Baker's July 9, 2014 letter stating that this painting is included in Ronald G. Pisano's The Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) (under catalogue number OPAA.615 in the Pisano/Chase Archives at the Kellen Archives of The New School, New York). In this letter, Dr. Baker writes, "It is an engaging portrait, and because of its sensitive handling and immediacy of portrayal, it is most likely a painting of one of Chase's daughters. The subtle lift of the head, the reflected light off the locket hanging from a bright red ribbon, and the general surety of brushwork, are hallmarks of the best portraits by William Merritt Chase."
