Born in New York, William Marple traveled to California for the Gold Rush of 1849 and settled in San Francisco where he began to paint landscapes. In 1869 he traveled to Europe to study the Old Masters and, upon his return two years later, enjoyed great commercial success. Marple returned to the Northeast in 1877, though he also traveled and painted throughout the Midwest.
