WILLIAM FREDERICK DE HAAS (American, 1830-1880)
    Sunset, circa 1860s
    Oil on canvas
    8-1/2 x 13-3/4 inches (21.6 x 34.9 cm)
Signed lower right: Wm.F. de Haas

Richard York Gallery, New York (label verso).

This majestic sunset over a hilltop panorama by Dutch-born de Haas shows his keen awareness of Frederic Church's masterpiece with a blistering sky, Twilight in the Wilderness of 1860 (Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH). After training in The Hague and moving to the United States, de Haas worked in New York's Tenth Street Studio Building alongside his brother Mauritz, his fellow Dutchman Kruseman van Elten, and the leading artists of the Hudson River School, including Church. De Haas became one of the nineteenth century's few American marine specialists. His expansive scenes of Maine (which the present work probably records), Long Island, and Newfoundland provide an important bridge between the Dutch tradition and the Luminist movement in the United States.
