William Slaughter was ordained a Lutheran minister after World War II. He was pastor in Lubbock, Mexico, and finally Dallas. While in Dallas he took up painting as a hobby, but success in painting changed his calling. In 1968, he won a first prize in landscape painting and in 1973 he won a first prize in still life painting. This painting from the early 1970s is an excellent example of Slaughter's Texas wildflower paintings.
