TWO SIOUX BEADED HIDE DOLLS

c. 1890

each with beaded facial features and horsehair coiffure, wearing traditional beaded and fringed hide dress

Lengths: 9 ½ and 10 1/2 inches


Condition Report*: In overall good condition. Larger doll: Hide with moderate use, including moderate soiling. Traces of yellow pigment through out dress, as well as a small hole near the front bust area and a small hole in the back of skirt. Back has 1-3/8" x 5/8" brown stain. and several small brown vertical stains near side seam. Front has 1-3/8 x 1/2" brown stain in skirt. Silk waist ribbon faded and has green stain on bow. All beadwork appears in good to excellent condition, including decorative belt, four earrings, and beaded-end hair ties. Small section of wrist fringing discolored and one fringe loss. One hair tie with beaded end detached. Green cotton on bottom of mantle faded. Red cheek pigment faded. On top of boot under skirt in black ink the number "38" is written. There is also a dot of black ink on knee under skirt. Smaller doll: Hide with moderate use with some heavy soiling. An approx. 1/2" x 5/8" hole in back of hide legging. Some holes and an approx. ½" x ½" tear in skirt bottom. Beads loose.
