TWO PLAINS BEADED LEATHER WHETSTONE CASESc. 1885
the first, Kiowa, with geometric designs stitched in red, white, and pony-trader blue beads, trimmed with metal cones and braided hide fringe; the second, Arapaho, with geometric designs in various shades of glass seed beads against a white ground, the hide thong closure decorated with two shell hairpipes and white glass beads
Lengths: 5 ¼ inches; 6 ½ inches excluding attachments
Condition Report*:
In overall good condition. Kiowa: leather with fine patina, beadwork bright with loss of approx. 1/2" on one side. Loss of major portion of metal-coned rawhide. Braided rawhide fringe intact. (Contents empty.) Arapaho: leather is supple, beadwork intact, excepting one white bead loss. Loss of approx. 1" of leather fringing around perimeter of case. Remnants of approx. 3/4" x 1/2" white sticker on the bottom portion of case, near top. Bottom case's leather lighter in color where cover protected. Shell hairpipes and white glass beads on hide thong closure extant. Contains whetstone. No apparent restoration.
