Description

Twin Figure Pendant
Coclé Province or Azuero Peninsula
A.D. 650 - 1520
Gold, Weight 95.05 grams
Height 1 7/8 in. Width 3 13/16 in.

The heraldically frontal figures stand on a single bar, and a further connection is made in the upper center where their fists meet, each clasping a bundled object ending in a small curled top (possibly a spear thrower). Each holds a large paddle-shaped club in the outer hand. A supernatural, trance-like, state is shown by bulging eyes and grimacing mouths along with bat noses and ears. Each has coiled ear ornaments and wears a simple loin cloth. The powerful composition is completed by downward-curving emanations from either side of both waists, their internal crocodilian notches somewhat obscured by casting fins. The massively sculptural execution seen here is exceptional, adding further power to this compelling double image illustrating duality. The condition is excellent.

The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.

Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
