Description
THREE SIOUX QUILLED COWHORN SPOONSc. 1890
the first, with short panel of dyed porcupine quills on the handle; the second, with notched bowl and long curving handle, wrapped with natural and dyed porcupine quills, braided sweet grass on the underside; the third, with narrow quill-wrapped handle, trimmed with hide thongs terminating in brass beads and red-dyed chicken feathers
Lengths: 10 ½ inches; 16 ½ inches; and 7 inches
Condition Report*:
In overall good to very good condition. Largest (sweet grass) spoon: Horn rim with usual wear and some abrasion around tip. Bowl of spoon has an approx. 2-2/8 mark of what may be ballpoint pen. Porcupine quilling with some loss and abrasion. Sweet grass tightly braided. Silk ribbon faded with some loss. Wooden tip extant. No apparent restoration. Medium (cow-horn-tipped) spoon: horn rim smooth with an approx. 5/8" hairline crack that does not appear on back. Porcupine quilling with loss of approx. 1/2" in horizontal row; some fading and loose at end. Cow horn tip extant. Smallest (chicken feather) spoon: Horn rim with slight chip near tip. Porcupine quilling bright and extant around handle. Carved ornamental horn tip separated from handle and attached by transparent tape. Four porcupine-quilled tassels with slight loss and abrasion. Red chicken feathers full and appears to be no loss of metal beads. No apparent restoration.
