    PROVENANCE:
    Vose Galleries, Boston, Massachusetts;

    [With]Johnson Hall Fine Art, Roswell, Georgia;
    Acquired by the present owner from the above.

    In a letter that accompanies this lot, Phyllis Braff, co-editor of the Thomas Moran Catalogue Raisonné Project, states "Moran was especially fond of using Venice as a theme, particularly because its large areas of expressive sky and reflective water were well suited to his interest in creating luminous effects. He wove references to activities along the city's waterways into his compositions, along with buildings, pilings, boats and their reflections. It seems significant to note that this 1890 painting was executed immediately following the two visits he made to the site, in 1886 and 1889."

    This painting will be included in Stephen L. Good and Phyllis Braff's forthcoming Thomas Moran Catalogue Raisonné: Oil Paintings of the artist's works.
