    Description

The Collection of Paul Gregory and Janet Gaynor

    JANET GAYNOR (American, 1906-1984)
    Papaya
    Oil on canvas
    16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 50.8 cm)
Signed in full at lower left: Janet Gaynor

As a painter, Janet Gaynor's specialty was still life, particularly floral motifs. This marvelous portrait of a juicy papaya is something of a departure from her best-known subject matter, although it is a motif she knew very well. As Paul Gregory noted: "During their marriage, Janet and Adrian spent a lot of time at their ranch in Brazil where papayas grow to be as big as your head! Their ranch in Anapolis, about 70 miles from the new capital Brasilia, was a real working ranch. They raised bananas and produce, and had a woman who took the fruit and vegetables to market where they had a stall. " In this fruit piece, Janet painted the papaya lifesize, with a wonderful directness which matches, and possibly even exceeds, her best efforts as a flower painter.
