    Description

The Collection of Paul Gregory and Janet Gaynor

    JANET GAYNOR (American, 1906-1984)
    Cauliflower, circa 1950
    Oil on canvas
    20 x 24 inches (50.8 x 61.0 cm)
Signed in full at lower right: Janet Gaynor

After Gaynor retired from the screen and married Adrian in 1939, she began painting on a more regular basis. The couple would spend eight months of the year in Brazil, away from the Hollywood hullabaloo, and Gaynor started exploring the surrounding environment on canvas, notably the plant life, as seen in this marvelous study of a Brazilian cauliflower. As she recalled in an American Artist magazine article (February 1982) : "The reason I became interested in doing vegetables is that I saw them growing in Brazil. I am not at all intrigued by the way they look in a supermarket. They're so beautiful in the sun. Why, cabbages look just like flowers to me, especially when the wind ruffles their blue leaves."
