These companion paintings by an unidentified hand draw upon still life developments in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, from the first three decades of the seventeenth century, at a time when still life painting was emerging as a specialty genre, and baskets were commonly depicted as containers for fruit and flowers. The broad handling and the treatment of the cloth with gilt thread suggests a Spanish origin for the pictures. The works probably date no later than about 1630, after which time still life arrangements in this genre generally became more complex.

A remnant of a signature and/or inscription is located on the far left side of the white tablecloth, on the portion which falls over the edge. The inscription seems to read "A Fe..." possibly a shortened form of Anno Fecit, a common Latin phrase for "year in which I made this" used by seventeenth-century painters. The name and the date are not discernible.
