After graduating, Fogel apprenticed with Mexican muralist Diego Rivera who introduced the young artist to styles and cultures outside of New York. Seymour Fogel was commissioned several murals by the Works Progress Administration and the Federal Art Project. In the mid 1940s, Fogel took up teaching at the University of Texas at Austin and became a keystone to the Texas Modernism movement along with his friends, Charles Umlauf and Kelly Fearing.
