Most wood equestrian figures are owned by the women's Sandogo divination society. Groups of smaller male and female figures may be cast on the ground so that the patterns they make can help determine a client's problems and possible solutions, but larger images such as the present finely-carved mounted warrior with a spear may be used as display pieces to advertise the diviner's powers. Horses are powerful and expensive to keep; they enhance the owner's prestige and, by extension, that of the diviner who owns figures of them, even though the horse is unrealistically small to indicate the rider's dominance.
