In 1938, the Averys-Milton, Sally, and their young daughter March-traveled to Gaspé and other parts of eastern Canada, where the landscape's crisp light and vivid color proved deeply inspiring. While Milton painted a celebrated group of coastal and harbor scenes, Sally Michel, working alongside him, created watercolors that reveal her own distinct vision. In Tall Fir, Gaspé, she distills the region's natural rhythms into simplified, radiant forms, achieving a lyrical balance of structure and expressive freedom. The work reflects her confident command of color and composition and her essential place within the Avery family's shared artistic dialogue.
