    ROBERT WOOD (1889-1979)
    Untitled Bluebonnet, 1941
    Oil on canvas
    24in. x 36in.
    Signed and dated lower left

Painted the last year he resided in Texas, this large-scale bluebonnet landscape showcases Robert Wood at the peak of his artistic power. The rich impasto of this canvas is intact without any restorations or inpainting. All of the elements of the prototypical bluebonnet painting are represented: the bluebonnets, the Indian paintbrushes, the prickly pear cactus, the caliche road wandering through the composition, the cabin, the oak trees framing the composition to the right and left, the hills in the mid-ground, the big blue sky, and the fluffy clouds. But it is the light and shadow that really make this painting extra special. The sun outside the picture plane is low on the horizon and shining from right to left, casting a rich glow on the tree trunks and bushes. Shadows are cast behind the clumps of bushes, trees, and the hill behind the cabin. The area in front of the cactus and in front of the large clump of oaks is brightly lit by the low angle of light. All of these elements work together in this masterful example of Texas landscape painting at its best.
