ROBERT WILLIAM WOOD (American, 1889-1979)Bluebonnets Near San Angelo
Oil on canvas
17-1/2 x 23-1/2 inches (44.5 x 59.7 cm)
Signed lower right: Robert Wood
Wildly popular during the mid twentieth century, landscapist Robert William Wood is best remembered for his vibrant paintings of the Texas Hill Country, where he lived during the late 1920s and early 1930s. In San Antonio, he worked with José Arpa y Parea and trained Porfirio Salinas - two other notable bluebonnet painters -- and exhibited at the famous Texas Wildflowers Competitive Exhibitions sponsored by the city's museum. "G. Day" or "Trebor" - "Robert" spelled backwards - are pseudonyms that he frequently signed on paintings from this period. Having moved from his native England to the U.S. in 1910, Wood traveled widely throughout the West, Mexico, and Canada before settling in California in the 1940s.
