Richard Larter is recognized as one of Australia's most innovative painters, known for his vibrant use of color and unconventional techniques. Born in London, he was initially inspired by the emerging British Pop artists of the 1950s and 1960s. His early work was often figurative, challenging social and political themes such as censorship, conformity, and the status quo. An insatiable fascination with the material qualities of paint led him to explore abstraction. This, along with his interest in geometric patterns and Ptolemaic astronomy, shaped his subsequent works of the 1980s.
Larter's paintings are held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Australian National Portrait Gallery. In 2008, the National Gallery of Australia honored his artistic legacy with a comprehensive retrospective exhibition.
