Richard Stout was born in Beaumont, Texas. He obtained his BFA at the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA at the University of Texas at Austin. He was also an art professor at the University of Houston from 1975-1995. Stout often created abstract paintings where the central shape was smudged in one direction as if he had used something to drag the paint across the surface, creating a similar effect.
