Description
Richard Gordon Stout (American, b. 1934)Services to be Held at 7:30 pm, Beaumont, Texas, 1952
Oil on board
24 x 32 inches (61.0 x 81.3 cm)
Richard Stout was born in Beaumont, Texas. He obtained his BFA at the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA at the University of Texas at Austin, eventually becoming an art professor at the University of Houston from 1975-1995. While he was best known for his abstract work, Services to be Held at 7:30 pm, Beaumont, Texas is firmly rooted in American Regionalism. It is a brooding, surrealistic work that explores the dark, seedy side of small-town life and human mortality. Everything from the style and palette, to the figures, either dejected men or menacing women, and broken store fronts, to the subject and title of the painting evokes feelings of despair and hopelessness, yet simultaneously promises the possibility of salvation.
